The University of KwaZulu-Natal, through the Corporate Relations Division, held its first five-kilometre Fun Run/Walk for the University’s staff, students and their families.
The event was in keeping with the University’s strategic goals of community engagement; creating a climate of social cohesion and ultimately, a healthy lifestyle. Not even the unfavourable weather, which saw winds reaching a speed of 28kmph, could stop participants from completing the race.
UKZN Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Nana Poku; Corporate Relations Acting Executive Director, Ms Normah Zondo; Student Services Executive Director, Dr Rose Laka-Mathebula; Professor Bala Pillay, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning; academic and professional services staff and students across all campuses were in attendance.
Commenting about the event, Zondo said, ‘This event was intended to promote institutional culture and climate amongst staff and students at the University and what better way of doing this near the warm Indian Ocean.’
Mr Mbuso Sibiya, a UKZN student, scooped first place among the male runners, followed by Mr Siyabonga Buthelezi in second place and Mr Sphamandla Mshengu in third place. Ms Thembalethu Ntuli scooped first place among female runners, followed by Ms Phethego Makaleng in second place and Ms Sanelisiwe Mchunu in third place.
In the male staff category, Mr Zamokuhle Ngubo took first place, followed by Dr Unity Chipfupa in second place and Mr Siyabonga Majola coming third. In the female staff category, Ms Lindiwe Nhlapho came first, followed by Dr Claudia Loggia in second place and Ms Anelisa Dabula in third place. The winners each received pedometers as part of their reward package with trophies to take home as a reminder of their success.
Featured in the event was a jumping castle, which attracted both young and old. ‘I’m having so much fun with my friends and this race came at the perfect time just after we finished our main exams so it was very relaxing and we love the beachfront,’ said Thambalethu Ntuli.
Another participant, Mr Sibusiso Hlongwa said he enjoyed the race with his friends and is excited about next year’s one which he plans to win.
